You May Well Be Helping a Friend Directly

♥ Big Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] winterstorrm for bringing this to my attention!! ♥

I've put two offers up:

One for Icons for any fandom (or no fandom).

One for Fic for Merlin or Doctor Who (any Era).

Please check out all the offers up for grabs and help if you can. My own family was heavily effected by this storm so you may well be helping me and my family directly (or indirectly) if you do. Thanks so much!!

Is there a way to help more directly for people in your specific area? Not that I would mind donating this way, but I'd feel good knowing it would go specifically to your area....

I know most of our aid right now is coming from the Red Cross. They list the local New Jersey chapters on their website here (scroll down for NJ chapters) and you are supposed to be able to donate to a specific local chapter if you so desire. Or you can just donate to the disaster fund. Either way, they are the ones currently on the ground offering food & shelter to my neighbors!

*hugs* Thanks, bb!! I really appreciate it.

Do you know which one would be considered your local chapter?

[identity profile] k-nightfox.livejournal.com 2012-11-03 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
My local is the Camden/Burlington chapter.

[identity profile] rocknvaughn.livejournal.com 2012-11-03 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, it appears it is more complicated than I thought. I cannot seem to be able to specify a specific chapter that is not MY local one? I may have to send a check to get it to your local one....

Arrgg!! Why they gotta make it so hard?? Maybe you could do it over the phone?

Honestly, though. Don't make yourself nuts. Any way you want to donate, it will get to people who need it.

My county (Burlington) is the largest county in the state, stretching from the Delaware river (which is a tidal river that was effected by the storm surge) all the way to the shore. I know that the local power outages are slightly worse in Camden county and even the power company itself has set up some local relief centers handing out water, ice and food to our residents who are without utilities.

We've had flooding in our county on the west side from the Delaware and it's tributaries and on the east side from the Ocean and bays.

I lucked out so, so much in all this. It turns out that my building is the ONLY building in my complex with power. Trees took out the lines to the rest of the complex and crashed down damaging many of the buildings around me. I took a walk through this afternoon and it really hit home just how lucky I am. I'm not particularly religious but it's almost as if the hand of God was specifically protecting my building! I am also thankful I'm no longer working as a home care nurse because I used to cover the whole dang county of Burlington. That would be a nightmare right now.

(LOVE your wtf icon btw! Where did you get that pic from?)

I will have to see if I can do that tomorrow. Otherwise I'll do the "where they need it most" crap, because it'll probably end up by you anyhow. I'm gonna see if there's someplace for me to donate blood this week also. I've got one of the rarer blood types ( B- ) so they are always asking me to donate anyway...

Is your building STILL the only one with power? If so, holy crap. Yeah, I can't imagine trying to travel for your job right now. I haven't spoken to my step-brother since the storm, but he lives in Bergen County (Northern NJ where they had some of that bad flooding also). I'm sure his specific house was okay because he lives at the top of a hill, but I wonder how or if he's back to work yet. He's a professional truck driver who drives into NYC to pick up freight and drive it regionally. I can't imagine the nightmare of trying to get into NYC, forget about also getting places to deliver after that...

When I go to work tomorrow, I will have to see if we are doing any sort of charity stuff also. I work for the Evil Empire, otherwise known as Walmart, as an optician. Sometimes they do drives so that local stores can give away stuff to local residents also.

I stole my WTF from a moving gif. I don't remember where I swiped it from, but I posted it on my photobucket for you:

Muh Baby looks so pretty but so upset there! It's funny, I can't quite place what ep that is from. Why is he so damn beautiful? I swear Colin Morgan is a life ruiner.

So, how does the Evil Empire treat you as an employee? For all that people bitch about Walmart, I am grateful they exist because I wouldn't be able to afford my insulin if it weren't for them. They charge me less than half of what EVERY other pharmacy does and that includes Target. Also, I always get my glasses from them since they seem to be the only place that carries frames that flatter my mug.

[identity profile] rocknvaughn.livejournal.com 2012-11-03 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I know! He absolutely is a life ruiner! I cannot place the episode either, but it looks rather S3ish or perhaps early, early S4. (S1 too early, not thin enough for S2, DEFINITELY not S5). If I think of it, I will let you know which ep its from...

He is too damn beautiful. It's just not damn fair.

As for Walmart, it sort of depends on the store. I've worked for them for over 13 years now (started out part time when my kids were babies). I have had relatively good luck with them, but I would bet not everyone has had that experience. Their health insurance sucks but most insurances do these days. Walmart has so many employees that none of the insurance companies would insure us all, so Walmart literally had to create their own.

But they have decent benefits otherwise. They were really great about me taking time off when Don was sick last year. I also qualified for a hardship grant during that time that helped pay a few bills. Everyone I work with in the optical shop is great, so it's usually fun going to work.

Off topic...

Here's a pic of my tattoo I was telling you about!

http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o699/rocknvaughn/blueberrytattoo.jpg

This was taked RIGHT after it was finished, so the colors are a little muddied by the irritation, etc. But you get the idea.

I would have posted the picture, but it's huge and would have eaten your page!

I love it!! LOL, being from NJ I am extremely fond of the humble blueberry. I grew up wandering the woods picking them off bushes wherever I wandered :D Your artist did a lovely job on that.
