Some Ideas:
-When Arthur learns of Merlin's magic, he also learns of Kilgharrah's early words to Merlin. They strike an adult Arthur in ways that the teenaged Merlin never comprehended. Merlin still hasn't really thought about what the dragon meant by them being two-halves of a whole, how they each need the other to be complete. Arthur can't stop thinking about it. Being a man of action though, he finally has enough of just thinking about it. (Would like Merlin to be much more skeptical than Arthur, possibly genuinely confused by and a bit resistant to Arthur's actions.)
-(Use any and all the eras you want for this.) Merlin remembers all his lifetimes and he remembers that in each one, Arthur only comes to him after his relationship with Gwen has crashed and burned. Merlin finally has enough of always being Arthur's consolation. He leaves before it can happen again. Arthur follows, leaving a bewildered Gwen behind. However, Merlin doesn't trust him and denies him. More than once. It’s not until this time period that he actually lets Arthur catch him.
-Merlin hadn't meant to hold onto his virginity for so long, he really hadn't. Back in Ealdor there hadn't been anyone who interested him enough to risk revealing his preference for men and once in Camelot, he'd just been too damn busy working for Gaius and the Prince and fulfilling his destiny of protecting Arthur. So, he'd waited. It wasn't that absurd for a sixteen year old to still be a virgin. However, by the time he was nineteen, it was getting somewhat pathetic. Then, enter Gwaine of the shiny hair, wandering hands and attraction to shagging in wildly inappropriate places. Places like the Prince's bedchamber. In a spectacular bit of ill-timing, Arthur returns to his room in time to witness both Merlin's first orgasm not produced by his own hand and the unexpectedly showy results. (You can go as humorous or serious as you like with this one. Would like to see A/M endgame.)
