nightfox: (100 things challenge)
This is part of a set of jewelry I am making from a portrait of Elizabeth I of England when she was still Princess Elizabeth. According to historians she was approximately 13 years old when this painting was done. I had finished the brooch as well but it seems to have gone missing. I've torn my home apart looking for it with no success so I'm going to have to do it all over again! *head desk* When it's done I'll post it for you! (Which may be a while, it's a tad labor intensive.)

After that I'll make the longer, plain pearl necklace that you see in the portrait as well. One of these days, it is my dream to have this gown reproduced, either by doing it myself (when I develop the necessary skills, I already have the pattern!) or by buying a reproduction (I found a seamstress who makes a pretty good reproduction of this gown but it's not perfect and it's also about $500. So I'll most likely wait until my own skills are up to the job!)

So, here it is, The Princess Elizabeth Necklace. My only concern is that I used pearls all the way around so I may also wind up redoing the necklace with the gold beads instead of the smaller pearls but I'm very happy with how the pendant came out. It was even more labor intensive than the brooch due to having to join several disparate brass pieces into one to get the right shape. Then those pearl drops at the bottom were a bit of a b*tch!

Hope you like it!

That is so beautiful! You're talented! Have you ever tried doing Native American jewelry? When I was a little girl a family friend who was Black Foot taught me how to make Native jewelry and dream catchers, but I've forgotten how to do it.

Thank you! Yes I do know how to do quite a bit of Native American jewelry, it's the first "real" jewelry I learned how to do. I spent a week in a jewelry shop on the Penobscot reservation in Maine learning how to do porcupine quill jewelry as well as woven beading and the more modern glass equivalents of porcupine quills (the NA's took to glass beads so quickly because quills are very delicate and they split and need replacing/restringing all the time.)

However, it's been a while since I've done that style of work and sold or gave most of it away.

I swear you and my mom are so similar when it comes to jewelry tastes. Not only has she seen Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, but she even bought a book that chronicled fashion and jewelry through the past 1000 years. (Though I attribute that to her inner fashion nerd.) Old school jewelry is definitely puts Mikimoto to shame.

Well then your mom is obviously a very cool lady ;-D. Historical jewelry and clothing are my second favorite hobbies (behind Merlin fanning)

Beautiful! I love that you are working from the portrait! Bringing that little bit of history back to life.

I love to do direct reproductions when I can. I have a few others I'll be posting among my 100 here.

I'm also working on a direct repro of Elizabeth's mother's (Anne Boleyn) famous "B" necklace and then going to make a personalized version with an "S" for myself (my last name begins with S). I have been looking for years to find a close enough B to reproduce that necklace! I can't yet do my own casting but I'm going to be taking classes (hopefully in the near future) to learn to do my own metal-smithing & casting work. Right now I have to find the right pieces and manipulate them by hand (pliers, cutters, solder and glue) into what I need. Still, I love the results so much that the work (sometimes painful) is so worth it to me!

Sounds lovely. My husband took a class at a local artisan guild basically, to learn how to design and cast our gold wedding rings. Lost wax casting, I think it is called? He was a poor student when we got engaged - and the rings are very simple and elegant and wonderful.

Good luck with your "S".

Thank you, my dear! I think you saw just a fraction of what I have stored up around here. We were too busy drooling over the clothes :p~ What was scattered on my desk the other day were just a few things that are sale-ready. I have a lot of half-finished projects in the making as well :D
